James has twenty years’ experience in communications and public engagement. He leads communication programmes on issues that matter.
James focuses on providing advice and strategy to the NHS and other public bodies, charities as well as private sector organisations that provide public services. He is an engagement and involvement specialist, and has a particular interest in co-production with members of the public, clinicians and other health and social care colleagues to integrate and improve public services.
James has considerable experience running awareness and behaviour change programmes from information rights to flexible working legislation. He has a strong track record in advising clients about communications and reputation, including high profile public policy issues.
Before setting up Barley Communications with Sam Williams, James was an Executive Board member and ran the award winning public services team at Grayling. He has previously worked for the health inspectorate, the Alzheimer’s Society and Scope, where he published two reports on equality issues concerning disabled people.
James is a Cabinet Office reviewer and mentor on the Government Communication Service’s Inspire programme. He is Vice Chairman of the Governing Body at New Valley Primary School and lives in Surrey with his family.
