Barley shortlisted for Communications Agency of the Year at Third Sector Awards

We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for the Communications Agency of the Year award at the sector-leading Third Sector Excellence Awards.

This category awards an agency which has ‘created a highly successful communications campaign for a client and provided an exceptional level of support and advice.’

We entered our work with campaign partners Hubbub, Ellipsis Earth and McDonald’s for Neat Streets, a campaign aiming to create a pioneering and replicable approach to litter reduction in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP).

Ellipsis Earth used drone technology and AI to identify and categorise individual pieces of litter to give insight into what types of litter were being dropped and where, the first survey of its kind in the UK. This intelligence was used to inform the strategic placement of bins, street cleaning schedules and fun, engaging interventions designed by Hubbub to encourage the public to dispose of their litter responsibly.

The campaign led to a 75% reduction in litter where interventions were installed, with reductions of up to 90% in some areas. The pilot was so successful that it has led to other UK councils, including Glasgow City Council, to change their approach to engaging the public on the issue, by using positive and playful communication and a data-driven approach.

Barley helped to achieve these phenomenal results with a compelling media campaign, which grabbed the target audiences’ attention on social media, and local and national media. The campaign achieved 82 coverage items with opportunities to see/hear of over 158 million.

Congratulations to all the other shortlisted agencies and entrants and we’re looking forward to the awards ceremony on 30 September. The full shortlist is available at: https://www.thirdsectorawards.com/shortlist-2022.
