The spectacular illuminated insect looms over the historic City market for October half term
One of London’s most atmospheric historic markets has welcomed a suitably spooky visitor this Halloween, as a giant jewel beetle takes up residence at Leadenhall Market.
The dazzling creature has arrived for half term and will remain in place for Halloween on Saturday 31 October. Its arrival is part of a programme of strange and intriguing installations and activities on offer across Leadenhall this half term, from miniature shopfronts and Halloween spell kits to evening walks exploring the darker side of the Market’s history.
The Wunderkammer, an installation inspired by 19th-century cabinets of curiosities, invites visitors to explore three miniature stores, including a tiny video shop celebrating Leadenhall Market’s starring roles in films such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
For Halloween, the Wunderkammer’s miniature serving window, inspired by Florence’s historic wine windows, is hosting Leadenhall tenant SoLo Craft Fair. Visitors who ring the bell can choose from a bewitching range of Halloween spell kits, packed with an enchanting mix of herbs, scents and gems. SoLo will operate from the Wunderkammer Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 4pm.
As darkness falls, the popular Burials, Bombs & Fantastic Beasts walking tours offer another way to discover the Market’s more mysterious side. Running on the evenings of Wednesday 28 and Friday 30 October, from 6.30pm to 8pm, expert guides lead visitors through tales of Roman burials, medieval murders, witchcraft and weird and wonderful creatures. Tickets cost £8.30 and should be booked online in advance.
Those who prefer their Halloween with a side of something tasty can enjoy food and drink at Leadenhall seven days a week, with plenty of businesses open at weekends. These include traditional Argentine empanadas from Chango Empanadas, burgers from Boom Bap Burger and Vietnamese street food from Banh Mi Aha, alongside freshly baked croissant buns from Buns From Home and French pastries from Aux Merveilleux de Fred.
The giant jewel beetle is free to see until Saturday 31 October. Full details of the Market’s Halloween activities, including the Wunderkammer and guided walks, can be found on Leadenhall Market’s What’s On page.
